Carl's Journey at The Bluffs
From Broken Beginnings to Sweet Success
Carl, a 43-year-old father from Eastport, Ohio, transformed his life at The Bluffs and discovered that recovery opened doors he never imagined possible.
Growing up in a broken family, Carl was raised primarily by his mother and grandmother after attending local schools in Sandy Valley, graduating in 2000. Like many young people, Carl was first introduced to alcohol around age 12 or 13, but it wasn’t until he moved in with his father that drinking became a regular part of his life.
“Neither of my parents were alcoholics when I was growing up, so I didn’t see alcohol as a problem,” Carl reflects. “But once I started working at 18, the people around me drank, so I would go to bars with them after softball games. At first, alcohol wasn’t really a problem.”
When Drinking Became the Solution
What started as social drinking gradually evolved into something more serious. Carl found himself drinking daily, using alcohol to cope with emotional challenges, particularly issues in his relationship with his girlfriend.
“I was drinking on a daily basis, heavy drinking, and never saw it as a problem until it became an issue with my girlfriend who did not want me to drink,” Carl explains. “But I still drank. I was drinking on a daily basis for months, and it took an emotional effect on me.”
The turning point came when Carl realized he no longer wanted to be controlled by alcohol. He made the decision that would change everything: he walked through the doors of The Bluffs.
Finding Hope at The Bluffs
“I told myself this is my chance at a new life, and I left all of that at the door during my time at The Bluffs,” Carl says. “I became closer to God, and I truly realize the effect alcohol had on my life.”
During his treatment, Carl formed meaningful connections with fellow patients, including Ves Frank, whom he describes as “a very inspirational person.” Their friendship would later blossom into a creative collaboration that brought music and hope to others in recovery.
Carl embraced every aspect of the program, diving deep into the therapeutic process and opening himself to spiritual growth. “The fact that my girlfriend was losing Our three girls by herself while I was in the Bluffs getting massages, swimming, playing cornhole and had no alcohol to temp me” helped him realize how his drinking had affected not just him, but his entire family.
A New Life Takes Shape
Today, Carl is the proud father of three beautiful daughters. His recovery has allowed him to be present for them in ways he couldn’t before. “The outside world had no effect on me so the song is really about my life and what I have done to hurt my girlfriend and how it has affected my family since I’ve left the Bluffs.”
Carl’s entrepreneurial spirit flourished in recovery. He started his own cookie business, which has grown successfully and provided him with both purpose and financial stability. “I am still close with God. I continue to song right. I’ve created my own cookie business, which is doing well and I have got so much accomplished.”
Giving Back Through Music
One of the most meaningful aspects of Carl’s recovery journey has been his collaboration with a fellow alumnus, Ves. Together, they wrote and performed an original song at The Bluffs Mental Health Awareness and Recovery Celebration Concert.
“We’d hang out, chat, and share stories. One day those moments turned into music,” Carl recalls. “We wrote the song together, and when we performed it at the concert, seeing fellow alumni who were at The Bluffs the same time as us singing along. It was really special!”
A Message of Hope
Carl’s story demonstrates that recovery is about building a life worth living. Through his relationship with God, his successful business, his role as a dedicated father, and his creative expression through music, Carl has created a foundation for lasting sobriety.
“The Bluffs gave me the tools I needed to build this new life,” Carl says. “I’m grateful every day for the chance I was given and the friends I made along the way. Recovery opened doors I never knew existed.”
For those still struggling, Carl’s message is clear: “This can be your chance at a new life too. You just have to be willing to leave it all at the door and trust the process.”
