Denise's Path to Recovery at The Bluffs:
From Weekend Drinks to Daily Dependence
From Weekend Drinks to Daily Dependence
Denise’s journey with alcohol is a stark reminder of how a casual habit can spiral into a life-altering addiction. Her story, from weekend drinks in her teens to daily dependence in adulthood, illustrates the insidious nature of alcoholism. But through her time at The Bluffs, Denise found a new path—one of recovery, self-discovery, and renewed hope.
The Slow Slide: From Social Drinking to Daily Dependence
For Denise, drinking didn’t start as a problem.
“Drinking, I didn’t see it like as an issue,” she recalls. “I guess it was more of the fun weekend thing.”
Growing up, alcohol wasn’t a major presence in her household. But by age 13, Denise had her first drink, setting the stage for a long struggle with addiction.
The shift from casual drinking to dependence was gradual but relentless.
“From really alcohol, when I was probably 22, became almost a daily a daily thing for me,” Denise shares.
What began as a social lubricant became a crutch for emotional regulation.
“Finding reasons to drink everything I did drinking with. Everything it escalated,” she explains.
The Emotional Toll: Alcohol as a Coping Mechanism
As Denise’s dependence grew, so did her reliance on alcohol to manage her emotions.
“I emotionally, I couldn’t get through things. I stayed in sadness. I stayed in hurt and envy and jealousy,” she remembers.
Unaware of the connection between her drinking and her emotional struggles, Denise found herself trapped in a cycle of dependence.
Attempts to quit on her own proved futile.
“I tried to take times where I would would stop drinking on my own. My own self will, but it didn’t last because the emotional aspect of it was still happening,” Denise explains.
The lack of healthy coping mechanisms kept drawing her back to the bottle.
Rock Bottom: The Turning Point
By her late 30s, Denise’s addiction had escalated dramatically.
“Couldn’t really deal with any type of emotional anything, happy nor sad,” she recalls.
Her drinking had become an all-consuming daily ritual, complete with hidden bottles and morning drinks to stave off withdrawal symptoms.
The breaking point came when Denise realized she “couldn’t do life anymore like that.” Her husband began researching treatment options, leading to a pivotal moment.
“It was the night before that I came here as he looked into it and I ended up going to the hospital,” Denise shares.
A Blessing in Disguise: Finding The Bluffs
What seemed like a low point turned into an opportunity for transformation. As Denise was being discharged from the hospital, fate intervened.
“The Bluffs had called and said we have a bed available for you,” she remembers. “Now looking back, of course, you know, God doing it for me. What I couldn’t do for myself, and it was just a blessing in that moment that we turned right around and came down here.”
## The Bluffs Experience: A New Perspective on Life and Sobriety
Entering treatment at The Bluffs marked the beginning of a profound change for Denise.
“I didn’t know what life looked like sober,” she admits.
But at The Bluffs, she found not just sobriety, but also community and understanding.
“I felt relief, I guess. After after, like, the detox period and the things of that nature starting to clear out, there was a relief. And I felt like not so alone for the first time,” Denise shares.
She discovered she wasn’t unique in her struggles, finding kinship with others battling addiction.
During her 16-day stay, Denise immersed herself in the treatment program.
“I tried to grab a hold of everything I can because I was desperate,” she explains.
This desperation turned into determination as she engaged with counseling sessions and began to understand her addiction as a disease.
The Ongoing Journey: Life After The Bluffs
Leaving The Bluffs was scary for Denise, but she found strength in the aftercare program.
“The aftercare turned out to be super important,” she emphasizes.
Denise embraced the 12-step program, which opened doors to spirituality, community support, and a new way of living.
Today, Denise’s life is transformed.
“I did never. I’ve never pictured my life could be like this,” she marvels.
Sobriety has improved her relationships and given her a new perspective on life’s challenges.
“Living life today actually living. So it’s cool,” Denise concludes, her words brimming with gratitude and hope.
