Take the first step toward addiction treatment by contacting us today.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two chemical compounds that can be found in cannabis. Interest in these two compounds has increased in recent years, especially when it comes to their possible health benefits. These compounds may even be useful in substance abuse treatment programs by alleviating withdrawal symptoms caused by opioid dependence.

At The Bluffs, we believe that addiction is both a physical and mental issue. Our experienced staff uses a wide variety of evidence-based therapies that ensure lasting recovery, while also providing medication-assisted treatment to aid with physical withdrawal. Detox and withdrawal are always safest under the supervision of medical professionals. If you or a loved one needs addiction treatment, contact us at 850.374.5331 to learn more about how we can help.

How Do CBD and THC Affect the Body?

CBD and THC are similar to the body’s natural endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that help regulate and balance bodily functions such as mood, appetite, blood pressure, and pain. Due to this, it has been seen that CBD and THC can be used as tools for addressing issues with appetite and pain that may be side effects of treatment such as chemotherapy.

The concept of medical marijuana is still relatively new, with its possible benefits still being researched. However, CBD and THC are already being used in treatment, and are showing promising results for the following conditions:

  • Anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Nausea, appetite loss, and eating disorders
  • Pain
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Movement disorders
  • Glaucoma
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBD)
  • Epilepsy and seizures
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Cancer
  • Symptoms of HIV/AIDS
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Opioid dependence

What’s the Difference Between CBD Vs THC?

Both CBD and THC are found in the cannabis Sativa plant, and they have very similar chemical structures. Though they are both cannabinoids, there are a few notable differences between CBD and THC:

  • While CBD and THC are similar, they have different psychoactive properties. Specifically, it is THC that gives the high that is commonly associated with marijuana use. CBD, on its own, does not produce this effect.
  • Some research suggests that THC, with its psychoactive effects, is more potent and effective when used as pain relief. However, CBD has been seen to provide anti-inflammatory effects that may be better for pain management in the long run.
  • Even though CBD is legal in most of its forms, THC is still illegal under federal law. In Ohio, only hemp-derived CBD oil is legal.
  • Since most drug tests screen specifically for THC, pure CBD will not be detected unless they are screening for all cannabinoids. However, since most CBD contains a trace amount of THC, it can still result positive for these tests.
  • CBD is well tolerated by the body, even in large doses. Long-term THC use, however, has been linked to negative psychiatric effects.

It is important to note that an entourage effect has been observed, meaning that the therapeutic effects of both CBD and THC are enhanced when they are taken together. However, THC, with its euphoric side effects, can be prone to abuse and any therapeutic use should be undertaken with the supervision of medical professionals.
